Stiff competition for places at Aalto University's technology-oriented schools

A total of 1 100 new students were successful in the joint application process for Master of Sciences in Technology and Architecture students in 2014. These students will take up their degree places in Aalto University's technology-oriented schools (Schools of Engineering, Chemical Technology, Sciences, Electrical Engineering, and the School of Arts, Design and Architecture). All in all, a total of 3,953 candidates made it through the application process for bachelor-level degree programmes in the fields of sciences and technology studies. The number of applicants fell by 8.6% from 2013. Applications from female candidates represent 26,2 % of all successful applications.

The points totals required in the national entrance exams for technology-oriented degrees were raised this year, with the highest required for Industrial Engineering and Management, Applied Physics, Mathematics, Bioinformatics, and Architecture. The area receiving the most applications was Computer Science and Engineering.

The School of Business remains a popular choice – 333 candidates were selected from a total of 3,138 applications

3018 first-choice applications were received for bachelor-level degrees offered at Aalto University's School of Business. For their part, a total of 3,138 applicants sought study places on the School's bachelor-level programmes taught at the University's Töölö campus.  10,6 % of applicants were successful (9,2 % year 2013).  In comparison to 2013, there was a slight rise in the number of applications  (3,011 applications; 277 offered a study place). This can be explained in terms of the expected level of annual variation.  The increase in the ratio of places offered and applications received can be explained by the increase in the number of places (40) made available for first-year students of business.

A total of 333 new students were accepted onto bachelor-level programmes at the Helsinki unit of Aalto University's School of Business in 2014. These students will study for Bachelor's (B.Sc. Econ) and Master's (M.Sc. Econ) degrees in business and economics.  For the second time, study places were offered for those who had been successful in the national Talousguru ("Economics Guru") competition. All three of the successful entrants seized the opportunity, and one of them will start their studies this year.

In the Master’s level admissions earlier this spring, 164 applicants were admitted to the School of Business to study for a Master of Science (Economics and Business) degree. The total number of applicants was 296.

This was the first year that the new target programmes were open for applications. Of the applicants, 115 students, or 7.3%, were admitted to study for a Bachelor of Arts degree. Applications from female candidates represent 71.3% of all successful applications.  Art Education, Graphic Design, and Interior Architecture were the most popular target programmes among the applicants.
