Katariina (Kati) Peltonen's ((M.Sc.), BBA) doctoral dissertation in entrepreneurship entitled The development of teachers' entrepreneurial readiness and its determinants will be examined at Aalto University School of Business on 5 December, beginning at 12 p.m. (Chydenia Building, Stora Enso Hall (H-324), 3rd floor, Runeberginkatu 22-24).

Professor Ulla Hytti (University of Turku, School of Business, Unit of Pori) will act as the opponent and Assistant Professor Ewald Kibler (Aalto University School of Business, Department of Management Studies) will be the custos.

The key to entrepreneurship education is an entrepreneurial approach to teaching

Enactment of entrepreneurship education requires us to look at entrepreneurship, learning and teaching in a new way. These three factors are so closely intertwined that the starting point for entrepreneurial  teaching must be the desire to facilitate entrepreneurial learning. However, this kind of learning is not possible without entrepreneurship pedagogical solutions.

As part of her doctoral research on entrepreneurship education conducted at Aalto University's School of Business, Katariina (Kati) Peltonen, M.Sc. (Econ. & Bus. Admin.), BBA, explores what teachers' entrepreneurial readiness means and how this area can be further developed.

Affective, conative and cognitive competences form the basis of entrepreneurial teaching

‘The meaning and content that teachers ascribe to entrepreneurship education and the way they see their role as entrepreneurship educators are essential when we examine the possibilities for developing entrepreneurial readiness from the perspective of the teachers themselves,’ Peltonen explains.

In other words, teachers’ entrepreneurial readiness consists of entrepreneurial and pedagogical competences needed in teaching. Indeed, according to Peltonen, these competences become activated and recognisable as entrepreneurial behaviour and activity when the teacher him or herself feels sufficiently prepared in terms of attitude, beliefs, motivation, volition and declarative and procedural knowledge.

Kati Peltonen's research demonstrates that a pedagogical awareness and openness to the philosophical aspects of education deepens our understanding of the meaning ascribed to entrepreneurship education by teachers. Collaborative learning and the support received from colleagues assist in the development of teachers' self-efficacy beliefs and entrepreneurial readiness.

Public examination of the doctoral dissertation

The doctoral dissertation of Katariina (Kati) Peltonen, M.Sc. (Econ. & Bus. Admin.), BBA, on the topic of entrepreneurship, entitled The development of teachers' entrepreneurial readiness and its determinants (Opettajien yrittäjyyskasvatusvalmiuksien kehittyminen ja siihen vaikuttavat tekijät) will be publicly examined at Aalto University School of Business on Friday 5 December 2014. The examination will begin at 12 noon in the Chydenia Building (Stora Enso Room H-324, 3rd floor), at the street address Runeberginkatu 22–24.

The opponent for the doctoral examination will be Ulla Hytti (University of Turku, University Consortium of Pori) and Associate Professor Ewald Kibler (Department of Management Studies, School of Business, Aalto University) will serve as the custos.

The doctoral candidate currently works as Research manager and lecturer at Lahti University of Applied Sciences, as well as a freelance entrepreneurship education expert trainer.
