Grants in support of theses and dissertations
The HSE Foundation receives donations for support of theses and dissertations and makes grants from these funds totaling 100,000 to 200,000 annually for example for master’s theses.
For development of new knowledge in business
Master’s thesis projects are one channel for active cooperation between the Aalto University School of Business and the business community.
Business and organizations that donate funds for this purpose can specify the research area or subject for which their donation is made. Research areas and subjects can be specified rather broadly.
The funds donated are used for the purpose proposed by the donor in the form of a personal grant or to offset the costs of research (travel, acquisition of material, etc.).
Donors can decide themselves on the amount of their donations
It is recommended that donations made to support completion of master’s theses should be a maximum of 13,000 euro and for licentiate theses or doctoral dissertations 20,000 euro. 20% of all donations are reserved for purposes promoting research and teaching at the Aalto University School of Business. Hence grants in support of theses and dissertations are as a rule a maximum of 10,400 euro for a master’s thesis or 16,000 euro for a licentiate thesis or doctoral dissertation.
In accordance with the decision of the Finnish Tax Administration, a donation of 850 to 50,000 euro is tax deductible from the earnings of the organization making the donation.
Donation procedure
Donors wishing to channel their donation to a particular area should state their wish in writing in the deed of gift, which they subsequently sign. The donor then presents the deed to the Foundation and deposits the donation in the Foundation’s account. The Foundation will channel the donated funds to the area of research specified by the donor. The Board of the HSE Foundation authorizes the grants committee to allocate money from the donations received for the purposes of research.
Grant application procedure
Students writing a master’s theses complete an application mentioning the subject of the research work to the Board of the HSE Foundation and thereby apply for a grant from the funds donated for this purpose. Applications must include a statement from the supervisor or examiner of the research.
As a rule, the grants committee authorized by the Board of the HSE Foundation makes grants from funds donated for research purposes every month.
